How to Write Resume Bullets That Show Results

Turn a list of duties into evidence a hiring manager can act on, with a simple formula and examples.

The most common resume problem we see isn't formatting or length. It's bullets that describe responsibilities instead of results. "Responsible for managing the sales team" tells a hiring manager what your job was. It doesn't tell them whether you were good at it.

The formula

A strong bullet answers three questions: what you did, how you did it, and what changed because of it. A simple structure is:

Action verb + what you did + the measurable result

Before and after

  • Before: Responsible for managing the sales team.
After: Led a 9-person sales team to 118% of annual target, the region's best result in three years.
  • Before: Helped with social media.
After: Grew LinkedIn followers from 2,000 to 11,500 in 12 months with a weekly content calendar.
  • Before: Worked on improving customer service.
After: Cut average response time from 26 hours to 4 by introducing a ticket triage system.

Finding your numbers

Many people say they don't have numbers. Most do; they just haven't looked. Ask yourself:

  • How many people, customers, projects or accounts did I handle?
  • How much money did I save, earn or manage?
  • How much faster, cheaper or more accurate did something become?
  • How did I rank against targets, peers or previous results?

If an exact figure isn't available, a careful estimate ("about 30 clients a month") is fine, as long as you can explain it in an interview.

Start with strong verbs

Open each bullet with a verb that shows ownership: led, built, launched, reduced, negotiated, redesigned, delivered. Avoid weak openers like "helped with", "assisted in" or "was involved in" unless they're genuinely accurate.

Keep it tight

Aim for three to five bullets per role, with your most impressive result first. One or two lines each is enough. A hiring manager should be able to skim your resume in under a minute and come away knowing what you achieved.
